The Best Dog Grooming Books

There are so many dog grooming books that naming the best of them can be risky as different people have different tastes and expectations. A book that is great for someone may be ho-hum for others. People also have vastly different reading skills, levels of comprehension, attention spans, and preferences.

So, is there a way to tell which books can be considered the best?

One criteria is if the book is comprehensive enough for dog grooming professionals, yet easy enough to understand for the beginning groomer who just wants to learn how to take care of the family pet.

Many reviewers agree "The Stone Guide to Dog Grooming for All Breeds," falls squarely within this category. Although a bit hefty at 302 pages, this book, which is illustrated with hundreds of instructive photos, drawings and charts, is written in a manner described as "comprehensive and comprehensible." It traces the history and development of  grooming, and has detailed instructions for grooming 125 breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club, as well as mixed breeds. It also has chapters on setting up a grooming business, the equipment you need, and sections on show grooming for selected breeds from specialty clubs.

Of course, one of the most successful how-to book series of all time is the  "Dummies" collection, which has guided do-it-yourselfers through everything from gardening, to languages, to computers.

The "Dummies" book on grooming dogs carries on this tradition, offers simple, step-by-step instructions on grooming your dog. It even teaches you how to train your dog for grooming and prepare your pet for show.

Another book reviewers qualify as one of the best dog grooming books "All-Breed Dog Grooming", a spiral-bound, 272-page volume described as a good general information book for both experts and beginners. It explains how to care for the 160 breeds recognized by the AKC and the Kennel Club of Great Britain and covers everything from nail care, to tooth scaling, to brushing, bathing, de-matting and ear cleaning.

"Ultimate Dog Grooming" was given high scores by Pet Quarterly when it came out. It said the book "takes out the guesswork out of grooming." A colorfully illustrated, large-format instruction manual, this book starts out with basic dog coat types and goes on to explain how to keep coats healthy, with sections explaining the grooming needs of specific breeds.

It is certain that the books mentioned here are far from being even the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the best books on grooming dogs. There are literally thousands of volumes out there, from simple instruction manuals to books that explain the business side of dog grooming. Whether you're in it for the business or for the love of your pet, building your own collection of what to you are the best dog grooming books can be a fulfilling and instructive thing to do.
